LOUISVILLE, Ky. (WDRB) — This week’s weather has forced school closures across the Louisville area and southern Indiana. Some have opted for traditional snow days while others have utilized e-learning.
However, Kentucky and Indiana both have limitations to how districts can utilize e-learning.
Kentucky statute allows districts to a maximum of 10 non-traditional instruction (NTI) days to count toward student attendance days and must be approved by the Kentucky Commissioner of Education.
NTI can be used if an entire district must close due to health or safety reasons.
School districts must use NTI district-wide. It cannot be utilized for one school in a district.
Here is a list of how many NTI days our area school districts have taken as of 4:30 p.m. on Jan. 8, 2025:
- Jefferson County Public Schools: 0 NTI days used
- Bullitt County Public Schools: 0 NTI days used
- Hardin County Schools: 1 NTI day used (scheduled Jan. 9)
- Oldham County Schools: 4 NTI days used (Jan. 7 and 8, scheduled Jan. 9 and 10.)
- Nelson County Schools: 1 NTI day used (scheduled for Jan. 9)
Indiana’s laws about e-learning is a bit more complex.
Indiana school districts can utilize a maximum of three days of asynchronous learning. Additional days where more than 50% of instruction is asynchronous require a waiver request.
The state’s Department of Education (INDOE) defines this as “self-paced virtual learning that can occur at different times and in different places that are particular to each student.”
There is no limit on how many synchronous e-learning days an Indiana school district uses.
Synchronous is defined by INDOE as instruction delivered live and in real time to a student by their teacher.
Greater Clark County Schools has maxed its three days of asynchronous learning. It has opted for traditional snow days for Jan. 9 and 10.
GCCS said the two snow days will be made up May 6 and 22, 2025.
New Albany Floyd County Schools has not utilized any virtual learning days this year. The district has opted for snow days this week, and again on Jan. 9.
NAFCS will make up its snow days March 17-20, 2025.
